Oldfield Agricultural Contractors - Shredlage

Cultivations and DrillingSuperior crop processing in wholecrop (alkalage) and maize silage.

Recent trials work from the USA has highlighted significant benefits in Dairy and Beef production by changing the way maize and wholecrop is processed through the forage harvester.

The crop processor rolls are manufactured with a counter rotating spiral groove, so that as the crop passes through it is pulled apart by the sideways movement of the teeth, cob pieces are fully broken down and the kernels are crushed completely.

ShredlageWhat is Shredlage?
Historically maize is chopped short to aid compaction in the clamp, and more recently for the needs of bio gas plant technology. Unfortunately short chopped maize does not allow the rumen to function effectively. Shredlage is generally a longer cut crop, 26-30mm, with the stalks ripped lenghways into planks and strings, allowing for improved effective fibre, with a greater exposure to the inner cell walls of the plant.

Benefits of Shredlage
- Greater surface area of shredded crop for Rumen bugs to attach to and digest.
- Improved bacterial fermentation in the clamp.
- Potential increase in production due to higher starch yield from shredded plant.
- Improved herd health due to more Rumen friendly silage structure.
- Potential to reduce bought in concentrates and to eliminate the need for structural feed supplements such as straw.
- Higher gas yield in bio gas digesters.
